Odors that can be felt in various diseases

With various diseases, the human body begins to emit odors, which are quite detectable by our imperfect sense of smell, says doctor from Germany Astrid Erdtmann.

The German doctor told Freundin magazine about what smells can be felt in various diseases. These smells, the expert emphasizes, are a reason to go to a medical facility, sometimes to call an ambulance.

Tonsillitis. If a sweet smell is felt in the breath from the mouth, this may be a sign of inflammation of the pharyngeal and palatine tonsils. Bacteria are responsible for this characteristic smell.

Additional symptoms are difficulty swallowing, fatigue, headache.

Liver problems. In this case, you can feel an unpleasant “metallic” smell in your mouth. The smell of ammonia can be felt from the skin with liver diseases. Ammonia occurs naturally when the body breaks down protein. A healthy liver converts it directly into urea, but if it is sick, the gas enters the blood, and the body tries to “breathe” it out.

Other symptoms are fatigue, loss of appetite, loss of work capacity, feeling full too quickly.

Cystitis. If you suddenly have a stronger-than-usual urine odor when you urinate, you may have a bladder infection. The concentrated smell is caused by bacteria that provoke putrefactive processes in the urine.

Additional symptoms are burning and painful urination, increased need to urinate.

Diabetes. By mouth. does it smell like nail polish remover or acetone? This can be a sign of type 1 diabetes. In addition, this smell can indicate a direct threat of a diabetic coma. The smell occurs when the body, due to a lack of insulin, has to produce energy from fat. Acetone is produced as a byproduct.

Other warning signals are an increased need to urinate and at the same time strong thirst, fatigue, dizziness.

Flu. Human breath has a pronounced unpleasant “aroma”. According to Astrid Erdtmann, the viruses and bacteria responsible for its occurrence feed on the cells of the mucous membrane, which then rot and smell.

Other symptoms of infection are headache and body aches, runny nose, hoarseness of voice.

Inflammation of the stomach. When burping, it smells like fermented fruit. The reason: inflammation causes the secretion of too much gastric juice.

Symptoms that can be noticed in addition to this are a feeling of pressure and overflow in the upper part of the abdomen, nausea.

Kidney disease . Does the skin smell slightly of urine? It is necessary to check the kidneys. If they are damaged, urea and creatinine can no longer be excreted in urine in sufficient quantities – instead, they are excreted through sweat.

Further warning signals – first an increase in diuresis, then a decrease in it, high blood pressure, swollen eyelids , itchy skin, frequent nausea.

Hypothyroidism (reduced thyroid gland activity). If your nightgown smells like vinegar when you wake up, you may have thyroid problems. It most often occurs in women aged 40 to 50 years. As the metabolism slows down, the body releases excess acid.

The following symptoms are also possible: fatigue, sensitivity to cold, weight gain, depressed mood, hair loss, constipation, pale, dry skin.
