Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences have confirmed once again that a sedentary lifestyle is fatal to health. Office workers are most prone to heart attacks and strokes. For decades, doctors have been warning about the dangers of sitting for long periods of time and the effects this habit has on internal organs like the heart.
And now a new study involving more than 100,000 adults during 10 years, became another alarm bell for a huge army of office workers.
Experts from China found that if people sit for more than 8 hours a day, which roughly corresponds to an office working day minus the lunch break, then the possibility their risk of having a heart attack or stroke increases by 20%. The risk of these most dangerous disorders in the work of the cardiovascular system increases by 49%, when compared with those who sit for no more than 4 hours a day, as the study showed.
Its authors claim that reducing the period in a sitting position and the growth of physical activity indicators for a person can be compared to quitting smoking in terms of benefits. Experts and doctors have repeatedly urged office workers, forced to spend a lot of time in a sitting position, to get up more often and take small breaks to do sports. And employers are encouraged to arrange standing workplaces in this regard.
