Organization will provide protection against senile insanity

If you have a habit of being organized, it provides additional protection against dementia . But a frequent change of mood has, unfortunately, the opposite effect.

Scientists from Northwestern University in Illinois observed two thousand adults living in Chicago for almost 25 years in order to discover the connection between character traits and cognitive decline.

It was found that well-organized people with a high level of self-discipline received better protection against senile dementia. Extroverts also had this protection, who had an extra year of healthy life before the onset of mild cognitive impairment, the main early sign of dementia.

But this effect was reversed in people with frequent mood swings. Thus, the key characteristics of a person's personality, which provide a decent level of protection against senile dementia, can be called high consciousness and organization.

They did not give one hundred percent protection against dementia, but they gave a few additional years of healthy life. Increased emotional expressiveness characteristic of extroverts, their talkativeness and openness made it possible to get one extra year of healthy life.

Classic neurotics, often sad, with mood swings and emotional instability, were the worst. They had mild cognitive impairment a year earlier. The results of this study completely coincide with the previously obtained conclusions of scientists that openness and increased social activity are protective factors against dementia.
