Non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease do not affect movement. These include other problems such as mental health, memory problems and pain. People with Parkinson's disease can experience a range of mental health problems alongside their physical symptoms.
“Tremors, muscle stiffness and slowness of movement are common early symptoms of Parkinson's disease, but there are other signs that should be aware of.”
There are certain non-motor symptoms, meaning they are not related to movement and muscle control, that may signal the condition.
In years past experts believed that non-motor symptoms were risk factors for this disease if they occurred before motor symptoms. However, there is growing evidence that these symptoms may appear in the early stages of the disease. This means that these symptoms can be warning signs that start years or even decades before the motor symptoms.
It says that possible symptoms are:
- Autonomic nervous system symptoms , such as constipation and gastrointestinal problems, urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunctions
- Depression
- Loss of smell
- Sleep problems such as restless legs syndrome
- Problems with thinking and concentration
