Pensioners advised to move more to avoid dementia

Dementia often occurs among the elderly. It is a condition in which the cognitive functions of the brain are lost. A person becomes forgetful, absent-minded, cannot perform simple tasks, loses clarity of mind.

If dementia is prevented at an early age, a sharp mind can be preserved in old age. So, for example, a new study proved the effectiveness of aerobics and strength exercises in the fight against dementia.

Scientists invited 184 patients aged 85 to 99 years. The cognitive functions of the brain were assessed in each of them. The participants talked about their daily habits and also passed neuropsychological tests.

It turned out that patients who included aerobic exercise in their daily routine had better and faster brain and mental activity than their peers who neglect training. The list of aerobic activities includes cycling, swimming and other similar activities.

Some retirees noted that they do not only aerobic, but also strength training – weight lifting and cardio training. In such a group of patients, the test results turned out to be even better.

Researchers emphasized that their discovery makes it possible to implement another method of prevention of cognitive diseases. Scientists also drew attention to the fact that physical activity and old age are not concepts that should be separated. On the contrary, regular activity is recommended for the elderly to keep the mind clear and the body toned.
