According to the results of a study conducted by scientists from Harvard University, with regular use of certain products, the risk of developing colorectal cancer increases by almost 30 percent.
Interestingly, this connection was found only in men.
Colorectal cancer is a malignant tumor of the colon. It occurs without symptoms for a long time, and then the following symptoms appear:
- weakness,
- malaise,
- loss of appetite,
- abdominal pain,
- dyspepsia,
- flatulence,
- intestinal disorders,
- intestinal obstruction.
According to experts, men who choose ultra-processed foods have a dramatically increased risk of colorectal cancer, as already noted, by almost 30 percent.
The study was published in the journal BMJ. More than 200,000 people aged 25 and over took part in it.
Each participant filled out a questionnaire in which he wrote how often he ate foods from the provided list – it had 130 items. The researchers monitored the health of the volunteers, and then identified those who were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. The observation lasted several years.
“We found a clear link between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and the development of this type of cancer. Colorectal cancer may be a disease whose development is particularly strongly influenced by daily diet,” said lead author of the study, Dr. Lu Wang.
Those who regularly ate sausage, bacon, ham and hot dogs were at risk. Processed meat with additives is the strongest risk factor for colorectal cancer, the scientists emphasized.
Among other things, they are high in sugar and low in fiber, which contributes to obesity, and obesity is an established risk factor for colorectal cancer.
Researchers note that these foods have a different effect on women's health. They cancer risks neutralize fermented milk products, such as yogurt, which they eat, compared to men, quite often.
Early signs of colorectal cancer
- bleeding during defecation,
- mucus in the stool,
- sensation of a foreign body in the anus,
- defecation disorders.
In the presence of metastases, ascites, an increase in the size of the liver and lymph nodes are observed.
Classic manifestations of the disease are:
- weakness, rapid fatigue;
- lack of appetite, disgust for meat food:
- unreasonable sharp weight loss;
- instability of stool (diarrhea alternates with constipation);
- impurities in feces (blood, mucus, pus);
- subfebrile body temperature;
- aching or spasm-like pains in the abdomen.
