Potato water and 6 more “life hacks” for caring for houseplants

How to keep plants healthy and beautiful, even if weather conditions and constant haste are against you?

Lack of sun and light, dry air and cold temperatures do not have the best effect on the condition of houseplants. The approach to each plant is individual, some species require more abundant watering and dry out in just a few weeks if they do not receive it; some need a small amount of liquid, their main source of nutrition is light. Of course, fertilizing the soil and maintaining a certain level of nutrients are also important. Despite all the well-known rules for caring for houseplants, there are several simple and practical life hacks that will be relevant at any time of the year.

Share a cup of your coffee with your plants

As it turned out, coffee is an ideal fertilizer for plants, it contains important nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Coffee is especially rich in nitrogen, which stimulates stem growth, makes it stronger and gives the sprouts a rich, bright color. This organic and very simple care method is especially suitable for roses, hydrangeas and magnolias.

Do not throw away the ashes from the fireplace

This method of enriching the soil may seem strange, but judging by the results, it really helps to prolong the life of houseplants and make them healthier. It is most suitable for plants grown in country houses and dachas. The ash left in the fireplace or barbecue is a source of calcium carbonate (limestone) and potassium. Add a small amount of ash to the soil, such an additive will be an excellent substitute for regular fertilizer.

Water the soil with water containing starch

Since in winter, due to the lack of sun, the lack of nutrients is felt especially acutely, plants try to increase starch reserves in fruits and seeds. Starch is ideal for storing glucose, and when it is lacking, the process of hydrolysis is triggered – the re-decomposition of starch into molecules. Instead of buying special fertilizers, next time do not pour out the water after boiling potatoes or pasta, cool the liquid and boldly proceed to watering.

Grind the eggshell in a pot

Eggshells are rich in lime, a versatile mineral that helps reduce soil acidity, and calcium, which is a great source of plant nutrition. Before adding the shells to the soil, crush them into small pieces and spread them evenly over the entire surface.

Place a sponge in the bottom of the pot

Although almost all plants need regular watering, some varieties are known for being able to go longer without water than others. To avoid taking any risks (especially if you forget to water regularly), before planting your plants in a pot, place a small sponge on the bottom and cover it with soil. The sponge will absorb excess water, and in critical situations, the roots will be able to feed on the stored moisture.

Dilute Epsom salt in a bottle for the next watering

A special fertilizer can be obtained by mixing a tablespoon of Epsom salt with four liters of water. Stir and let the liquid infuse for several days. Houseplants will benefit immensely from the magnesium and sulfate that has arrived, because the crystalline powder is a source of many minerals.

Prepare a vinegar fertilizer

Some houseplants love vinegar, especially species with flowering buds. The acid promotes rapid root growth and lush flowering, so as a result you will get a visible result that will please you. Mix a teaspoon of white vinegar with one and a half liters of water and then use the solution about once every three months. The main thing is not to overdo it with abundant watering.
