Prediabetes increases the risk of heart attack in young patients

Young people with high blood sugar that indicates prediabetes, have an increased risk of heart attack. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania came to this conclusion.
If a young person has a higher blood sugar level, which indicates prediabetes, then the probability of being hospitalized due to a heart attack is higher than that of peers with normal sugar levels.
The presence of prediabetes means that the level of sugar in the blood is higher than normal and is between 100 and 125 mg/dL. However, this is not enough to diagnose full-fledged type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is very common in the world, and having it increases the risk of developing diabetes.
According to the US National Institutes of Health, about 88 million American adults aged 18 and older already have prediabetes, which is more than a third of the entire adult population.
Almost 29 million people with prediabetes are in the age group from 18 to 44 years. Prediabetes requires treatment, if it is not treated, the condition progresses to full-blown diabetes, which is already incurable.
The authors of the study studied the medical records of patients from the National Inpatient Sample – the largest publicly available database of hospitalizations in the United States.
They showed that adults with prediabetes had higher cholesterol levels and were hospitalized more often for heart attacks. This conclusion remained even after taking into account other factors affecting the risk of heart attack at a young age.
