Protein foods that can cause weight gain

Although protein foods are usually recommended as ideal for weight loss, some of them are quite capable of making your body gain a few extra kilograms.

The nutritionist said that protein is a macronutrient necessary for building muscle mass.

« Since protein helps prevent excess fat and curb hunger pangs, it is necessary to maintain a healthy weight and shape.” According to the expert, adults are recommended to consume 0.8 g of protein per kilogram of body weight every day. Athletes who want to build muscle consume 1.2 to 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight every day.

Within this amount, however, one should not mindlessly eat protein-rich foods, no matter how attractive (in terms of possible weight loss) it may seem. The doctor warned that it is quite possible to gain extra weight because of protein products.

“Check not only the amount of protein, but also the ingredients or the number of calories in the food. Because some supposedly healthy sources of protein hide the traps of fat and sugar,” the expert shared her advice.

Protein bar. Many protein bars contain trans fats, sweeteners and preservatives in addition to protein. What seems like a good post-workout snack can quickly negate your efforts in the gym.

Fat cheese. Cheese is high in protein, but some types, such as processed cheese or camembert, not very good if you want to lose weight. Although they also contain a lot of protein, their fat content is very high – if there is such a product, then only in small doses. However, the doctor noted, “even with less fatty varieties, you should pay attention to the right amount and not eat too much cheese.”

Nuts. Their advantages: a large amount of important omega-3 fatty acids and protein (depending on the variety). Cons: nuts are high in calories, many contain a large amount of carbohydrates (for example, cashews are rich in them). That is why they should be consumed only in moderate quantities, otherwise you can gain extra weight.

“A small handful of nuts is quite enough as a snack between meals or as a filling for yogurt or porridge. By the way, peanuts contain the most protein,” the doctor informed.
