Quality of vision: how over-the-counter eye drops harm health
0 < p>Using eye drops without a doctor's prescription can not only damage vision, but also worsen the general state of health. Some pharmacological drugs for the eyes can affect cardiac activity, cause tachycardia, increase blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
The professor and ophthalmologist said that the uncontrolled use of drugs, in particular eye drops, is a problem of medicine in general. According to her, even simple tear drops are a pharmacological preparation, which contains an active substance, preservatives and stabilizers. They can have a negative effect on the eyes, causing a number of symptoms, the doctor said. Dry eye syndrome occurs most often, despite the fact that it seems that they treat such a condition, but in response to burying, there may be a feeling of dryness, cutting, redness of the eyeball. Toxic-allergic reactions are also dangerous,” said the professor.
Tear substitutes in general are unlikely to lead to a permanent decrease in vision, but they can lead to deterioration of the general condition, disruption of the tear film, which affects the quality of life. Drugs used to treat serious diseases, taken without a doctor's supervision, can reduce vision, as they can increase clouding of the lens. Some drops affect not only the eyes, but also the cardiovascular system.
The professor warned that any uncontrolled intake of eye drops can increase dry eye syndrome, complicate treatment or lead to irreversible consequences. That is why she urged to consult a doctor first.
