The study confirmed what was already in doubt many smokers People who have decided to quit smoking have an increased risk of recovery due to cravings, as a result of which they attack sweets.
Regular smokers who are trying to quit the bad habit have an increased tendency to so-called comfort eating, that is, the absorption of large the amount of flour, sweet and fatty dishes in order to improve mood. And this can contribute to weight gain, as a study by scientists from the University of Minnesota showed. They asked 42 smokers not to touch cigarettes for a day, and then offered them a tray of different snacks to choose from.
The study participants did not know its purpose, so their choice was unconscious. The snack preferences of those who did not smoke for one day were compared with the choices of smokers who did not give up cigarettes. It turned out that in the first case, people more often chose snacks containing a large amount of salt and fat.
In general, they consumed 30% more calories, compared to current smokers or those who had never smoked. Experts explain this by the fact that people try to use high-calorie food to drown out the emptiness that arises in them in the absence of nicotine. Of course, this is not a valid reason for not giving up smoking. The right regimen and professional help will help victims of nicotine addiction get rid of it without significant shocks to their waistline.
