How the daily activity of reading books contributes reducing the risk of mortality by 20%, a new study from Yale University showed.
Yale scientists found that reading books extends people's lives if it becomes a daily habit – thanks to this, good cognitive health continues. The journal Social Science and Medicine told about their discovery: it talks about what the researchers discovered – people who are used to reading live longer than those who don't read. The conclusion about this was made after 12 years of observation.
“The habit of reading in people was associated with a 20 percent reduction in the risk of mortality, compared to its absence. Those who read more than three and a half hours a week lived about 23 months longer than people who did not read,” the publication quoted the scientists.
They also added that the analysis showed the benefits of reading specifically books According to experts, any level of book reading provides significantly more life-long benefits than reading periodicals. The researchers believe that reading books was more effective because it engages more cognitive abilities and provides a “survival advantage due to its immersive nature that supports high cognitive status.”
Scientists emphasize that maintaining good cognitive health has very important for quality longevity. The stronger and healthier the brain, the lower the risk of age-related conditions such as dementia.
“The mind is like a muscle that needs to be exercised and stretched to stay healthy. Reading trains this “muscle”, helping it to remain strong for a long period of time,” the authors of the work said.
