Regular consumption of sugary drinks increases the risk of developing arthritis

Drinks high in glucose and fructose can cause inflammation in the body.

Arthritis can lead to pain, inflammation, and mobility problems. While there is no cure, there are steps you can take to try to ease symptoms.

As with many other diseases, diet can play a role in how severe arthritis symptoms can be. One ingredient to avoid is sugar, as studies have shown that it can increase inflammation.

Drinking high-sugar drinks may have a “significant” impact on arthritis. In a multivariate pooled analysis, we found that women who consumed one or more servings of sweetened soda had a 63% higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis compared with those who did not consume sweetened soda or consumed less than one serving per month.

Regular consumption of sugar-sweetened sodas, but not diet sodas, was associated with an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis in women, independent of other dietary and lifestyle factors.

Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the body’s immune system targets affected joints, causing pain and swelling.
