Here is a study that may surprise runners. It turns out that long-distance running makes men more vulnerable to heart attacks and strokes. But for women, running is more beneficial than for men.
Also, observations have shown that long-distance running adds almost 10 years to the vascular age of male athletes, that is, vessels age. In the case of male runners, their major arteries were found to be much stiffer than expected, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
The study found that men who regularly ran marathons , triathlons or long bicycle rides, their vascular health was 10 years older than peers who did not enjoy these physical activities. Such high-intensity sports events as marathons, on the contrary, strengthened women's health. They reduced the average age of vascular health by 6 years.
More than 300 runners over 40 took part in the study. It is interesting that women are often advised not to run, as it allegedly threatens changes in the elasticity of the breasts, the appearance early wrinkles, age spots, etc. In addition, runners often lack fat under the skin on the face, which greatly ages a person.
