Science has learned why we like this or that music

The study showed that that musical preferences may change over time. But people especially love the music they got hooked on as teenagers.

Have you ever seriously thought about why we like a particular song, band or genre in particular. The answer may lie in personality type, although other factors may also play a role, as scientists from the University of Cambridge found. Many of us tend to develop musical preferences during our teenage years, at the same time as forming our social identities.

These preferences change over time, but research has shown that we tend to be particularly passionate about music during this teenage period. . Then we remember our preferences, formed between the ages of 10 and 30, much more easily throughout our lives. And the peak is at the age of 14.

Musical tastes are often determined by the best genres, but it is much easier to understand them by specific attributes, according to scientists. It is excitement, valence and depth. Disturbance determines the amount of energy and intensity of the music, valence is a spectrum from negative to positive emotions, and depth indicates the level of both emotional and intellectual complexity. Greater depth often correlates with lower valence, so sadness in music also creates depth in it.
