Scientists have successfully tested the drug cabotegravir, which works as a short-term vaccine against HIV.
The New Daily reported that this was a breakthrough in the prevention of this infection. Previously, cabotegravir was 89% more effective than two antiretroviral drugs sold under the brand name Truvada.
Study of 3,223 women aged 18 to 45 from seven African countries who were at high risk of HIV infection , conducted by scientists from North Carolina (USA).
Half of the volunteers received an injection of the real drug every eight weeks, as well as a placebo pill every day. The other half received a placebo injection and a tenofovir/emtricitabine pill.
The injection was found to be nine times more effective at preventing HIV infection than the pill.
< p>“The results were so clear that the third phase study was prematurely terminated,” the article says.
It is known that cabotegravir is already approved in Canada for the treatment of HIV as part of combined drug therapy.
