Scientists: Electronic cigarettes lead to inflammation in the intestines
0
Scientists conducted a study on the impact electronic cigarettes on the human body and found that they lead to inflammation in the intestines.
As part of the study, experts used three-dimensional models of intestinal tracts, which were created from human cells. The effect of electronic cigarettes on the intestinal mucosa was modeled. As a result, the scientists recorded the destruction of the first physical barrier of the intestine-epithelial markers of tight junctions.
The authors of the paper found that the inflammation was caused by two chemicals that are used as the basis for all liquids for electronic cigarettes – it vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol.
Scientists emphasized that this is the first study that showed how regular exposure to electronic cigarettes increases the susceptibility of the intestines to bacterial infections. It is assumed that a number of experiments will be conducted in this direction.
