Scientists find link between liver cancer and sugary drinks

Sugar has long been considered a harmful and even dangerous product. In excess, this component is found in sweets, carbonated drinks and pastries. A new study has shown that drinks with added sugar can lead to liver disease and even oncology.

Scientists studied health data on more than 98.7 thousand women. They took the information from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) database, which includes 40 clinical trials conducted between 1993 and 1998. The women whose medical records were analyzed by specialists were between 50 and 79 years old at the time of the research.

The participants had to tell their doctors how many sugary, soft and fruit drinks they usually consumed. Almost 7% of the women said that they drank one or more servings of drinks every day. Another 13% noted that they drank drinks containing artificial flavors every day.

Over 21 years of follow-up, more than 200 cases of liver cancer were detected in the participants. Liver failure was also the leading cause of death for women aged 45 to 54.

However, the researchers said they did not have enough evidence to link diet to liver disease mortality. They said this is the first study of its kind to link sugary drinks to liver disease.
