Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore (JHUSOM) have discovered a pathology that increases the risk of developing dementia. According to the results of the study, structural or functional disorders in the left atrium increase the chances of detecting a neurodegenerative disease by 35%.
In the article, it is reported that specialists studied the data of more than 5 thousand participants, whose average age was 75 years.
Scientists also tested the decline in cognitive abilities that develop during dementia. In addition, the medical records of the test subjects were studied, they underwent echocardiography, electrocardiography and blood tests.
Research showed that 763 people developed dementia, and 1,709 people developed atrial cardiopathy. In the latter group, the risk of dementia increased by 35%. In addition, patients who survived a stroke and atrial fibrillation had an increased probability of developing dementia – 31%.
