Scientists found out who is happier – married or single?
How accurate was William Shakespeare when he said: “better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all”? Researchers at the University of Michigan (USA) conducted one of the first studies of its kind to measure the happiness of married, divorced and single people at the end of their lives to find out how much love and marriage played into overall well-being.
The study examined the relationship histories of 7,532 men between the ages of 18 and 60 to determine who was the happiest at the end of their lives.
“People often think that they you need to be married to be happy, so we asked the question: do people need to be in a relationship to be happy? Does Living Alone Mean Your Whole Life Of Misery? some point but it didn't work? “, said William Chopik, associate professor of the Department of Psychology at MSU and co-author of the article. “It turns out that your happiness in being married is not the right choice.”
Results of the study
“We were surprised to find that single people throughout their lives and those with different relationship histories did not differ from each other in how happy they were. This suggests that those who “loved and lost” are just as happy at the end of life as those who “never loved at all”.
The main conclusion of the researchers: people can certainly being unhappy in relationships, while single people find satisfaction in other things in their lives: friendships, hobbies, and work.
