Coffee has several health benefits – it contains antioxidants, improves brain function and provides energy in the morning. However, new research suggests that drinking too much coffee in the long term may increase the risk of heart disease.
In the course of the new work, scientists analyzed genetic and observational links between the amount of coffee consumed and blood cholesterol levels, using health data from 362,571 participants aged 37 to 73.
They found that drinking six or more cups of coffee in a day can increase the amount of lipids (fats) in the body and significantly increase the risk of heart disease. Moreover, it was established that the greater the amount of coffee consumed, the higher this risk.
As experts explained, the whole point is a substance called cafestol, which is contained in coffee beans. It is a potent cholesterol-raising compound that is activated in hot water.
However, its concentration in coffee depends on the beans and brewing methods. The highest amount of cafestol is found in unfiltered brewed coffee, while a small amount is found in filtered or premium coffee.
