Scientists from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden have found that the risk of infection with parvovirus depends on blood type. This virus is a classic cause of childhood rash.
A blood type is, in essence, a set of individual antigenic characteristics of red blood cells. It all depends on what antigens are located on their surface. One of the antigens is the Rh factor. It can be in the form of modifications, denoted by the letters D, C, c, E, e.
It turned out that with the Rh(D) modification, people have the highest risk of parvovirus infection. It is possible that this antigen is needed by the virus to penetrate the cell.
