The study was conducted by researchers at Ben-Gurion University. They found that three meals based on the principles of the Mediterranean diet can help reduce fat deposits in the heart and liver. Also, for 18 months, following a diet that includes a lot of fruits, vegetables and nuts can help reduce waist size.
The trial involved 278 adults with elevated blood lipid levels and abdominal obesity, which is associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. As a rule, the volunteers followed a sedentary lifestyle. At least three times a week, the study participants had to eat lunch according to the principles of the Mediterranean diet or a low-fat diet.
It is noted that the lunches of different groups contained the same number of calories. All participants ate 28 grams of walnuts daily. Some volunteers visited the gym, performing moderate-intensity physical exercises there. After 18 months, experts performed a full-body MRI.
It turned out that these principles of life helped reduce the level of fat deposits around the heart and liver compared to a low-fat diet. Thanks to the Mediterranean diet, the participants' waist circumference significantly decreased.
