Scientists have discovered the danger of vitamin D deficiency

Vitamin D is necessary for a person to maintain mental health and work properly immune system. Its deficiency can lead to a decrease in bone density. A new study has shown that there is another dangerous side effect of being deficient in this vitamin.

According to data published in the journal Science Advances, people who do not get enough vitamin D may have a higher risk of opioid addiction.

“Deficiency can cause a craving for endorphins – mood-enhancing chemicals. Opioids can mimic this effect, relieving pain and causing a feeling of euphoria,” the study says.

Scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital, based on patient records, concluded that “people with vitamin D deficiency are more likely to use opioids and abuse them”.

The results of the study are published on the website Massgeneral.org. “Redressing vitamin D deficiency may be an inexpensive and effective means of preventing and treating this condition,” said study author David E. Fisher.

While the results are encouraging, this does not mean that vitamin D supplementation will replace existing methods of addiction prevention and treatment, the publication writes. Scientists are just beginning to investigate the effects of supplements. Further clinical trials are needed to confirm the hypothesis.
