According to a new study, grapes are not only tasty, but also healthy treats. Scientists have come to the conclusion that sweet berries can help increase life expectancy.
Although the study was conducted on mice, its authors have every reason to believe that people can achieve impressive results. Dr. John Pezzuto, who was part of the research team from Western New England University, estimated that a person's life expectancy could be increased by four to five years with regular consumption of grapes.
“What inspires me in this study and topic, is that more research will be done on antioxidants and their role in the treatment and prevention of disease in general. People will have even more reasons to include a variety of foods in their diet,” commented nutritionist Laura McDermott on the results of the study.
According to her, grapes contain many antioxidants, including resveratrol, catechins, quercetin and anthocyanins. In combination with a balanced diet, they help fight free radicals, reduce oxidative stress and have an anti-inflammatory effect.
The nutritionist also points to the benefits of grapes due to the presence of phytonutrients. They have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, helping to maintain cell and DNA health.
