A group of researchers from the University of California, Davis discovered a special type of stem cells that can reduce amount of the HIV virus that causes AIDS.

In addition, they can increase the body's antiviral immunity and restore intestinal lymphoid follicles damaged by the simian immunodeficiency virus, the equivalent of HIV in humans.

Research has shown the mechanism by which mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) enhance the body's immune response to the virus. The scientists also presented a road map for developing multifaceted strategies to eradicate HIV.

While antiretroviral drugs are effective in suppressing viral replication, they do not reverse the damage done to the immune system. The researchers injected MSCs obtained from the bone marrow into rhesus macaques, in which AIDS was simulated, immunity and intestinal functions were impaired.

The study showed that MSCs can modulate, change and remodel the damaged area of ​​the mucous membrane. As a result, antibodies and T-immune cells targeting the virus grew rapidly. Stem cells played an important role in the regeneration of lymphoid follicles. MSCs also offer an opportunity for an innovative multifaceted HIV treatment strategy that complements existing methods.
