Scientists found out how chronic pain affects the probability of gaining excess weight.
Scientists from Yale University, together with colleagues from the University of Rochester, found that people who suffer from chronic pain have changes in the brain region that associated with motivation and satisfaction.
During the study, observation of patients who regularly experience pain in the lower back was organized. Scientists have drawn attention to the fact that volunteers often complain of difficulties in obtaining a feeling of satiety from eating, constantly feel hunger and increased appetite. Such symptoms were accompanied by structural changes in some parts of the brain.
Thus, they came to the conclusion that excess weight in people suffering from chronic pain is not associated with a decrease in physical activity, but with that food ceases to seem tasty to them and is unable to bring pleasure.
