Scientists from the University of Oxford conducted a recent study that showed that free sugars in food products, for example, those contained in sugary drinks and sweets, increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Experts studied data from more than 100,000 people who assessed their diet for 9.5 years. As a result, they concluded that high intake of free sugars is associated with an increased risk of all heart diseases, writes BMC Medicine.
For every 5% of energy obtained from free sugars, the likelihood of cardiovascular disease and stroke increased by 7%. However, scientists found that overall carbohydrate intake was not associated with an increased likelihood of such ailments.
Moreover, consuming five grams more fiber per day was associated with a 4% reduction in overall risk of heart disease.
