According to the study , patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) most often develop coronary heart disease (CHD).
Kristina D. Svendsen, a researcher at Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen, Norway, and colleagues studied whether COPD patients have a higher risk of CHD.
347 COPD patients and 428 undiagnosed controls who underwent coronary computed tomography angiography (CCT) and lung CT were included in the analysis .
The researchers found that when adjusted for additional factors affecting the risk of CHD, the incidence of the disease was higher among people with COPD than in the control group.
“This study shows the importance early detection of coronary heart disease in patients with COPD, especially taking into account mixed symptoms,” Svendsen notes.
