“Metabolic syndrome was associated with Alzheimer's disease, but not with vascular dementia. In patients with metabolic syndrome, the probability of developing Alzheimer's disease is 11.48 times higher than in patients without metabolic syndrome,” says De Heng Jeong, one of the authors of the study.

Vascular dementia was associated only with by several risk factors that could affect the state of the vessels, and not the metabolic syndrome. The scientists hypothesized that the relationship between metabolic syndrome and dementia would vary depending on the type of dementia.

For their study, the team analyzed data from a sample of more than 84,000 people aged 60 and older. Scientists classified the participants depending on the type of dementia. After that, a logistic model was used to analyze the relationship between forms of dementia and metabolic syndrome.
