Aging is inevitable, and with it, changes health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dementia affects almost 55 million people worldwide. The disease is characterized by memory loss, disability, and increased dependence on others. Moreover, up to 70% of dementia cases are caused by Alzheimer's disease.
Studies have shown that dementia develops in people due to both genetic and environmental factors, but prevention is possible. In particular, there is one popular drink that helps reduce the risk of cognitive problems.
It is green tea. A study by scientists from Qingdao College, China, published in the journal Translational Psychiatry, showed that people who drank tea were 16% less likely to develop various forms of dementia than those who preferred other drinks. People who consumed tea moderately (1-6 cups per day) had a 16-19% lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and a 25-29% lower risk of developing vascular dementia.
Researchers also found “U-shaped relationship” between the amount of tea and the risk of dementia. Such a strong protective effect appeared when consuming three cups a day. Interestingly, the researchers did not observe a significant difference in the risk of developing dementia between those who drank more than six cups of tea and those who did not drink tea at all.
