Researchers from Imperial College London studied the effect of beetroot juice on blood pressure. It was found to reduce it.
In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study, 15 healthy participants with normal blood pressure participated. They were given either plain beet juice, which contains nitrates, or beet juice with nitrates removed.
Participants did not know which version of beet juice they were drinking. Blood pressure measurements were taken 30 minutes, one hour, and 24 hours after beet consumption. Then the procedure was repeated, changing the participants' places.
Compared to a placebo, the researchers found that the use of nitrated beetroot juice reduced systolic blood pressure by 5.2 mm Hg. for 30 minutes.
This effect on blood pressure diminished after 60 minutes, and no reduction in systolic blood pressure was observed at 24 hours. However, nitrated beetroot juice still lowers blood pressure.
