Cancer is the leading cause of death in the world, and the statistics create a sense of despair. You are not completely in control of cancer – there are steps you can take to reduce your risk. A growing body of evidence suggests that hot drinks may increase the risk of esophageal cancer, which occurs anywhere in the esophagus, sometimes called the esophagus or esophagus.
That's the conclusion of a major review of the literature on the subject by the of Cancer Screening, Yanting Oncology Hospital (China).
“Coffee, tea and mate can cause esophageal cancer by causing thermal damage to the esophageal mucosa,” the researchers write.
The mucosa is is the inner lining of the esophagus.
“If this is the case, the risk of esophageal cancer associated with thermal injury may be high in populations in which these beverages are commonly consumed.”
In addition, these beverages may cause or prevent esophageal cancer due to their chemical components. The researchers reviewed a large number of epidemiological studies that examined the association of hot drinks or food with high fever and the risk of developing esophageal cancer. In addition to a systematic review of these studies, they reported results on quantity and temperature of use separately.
Most studies showed an increased risk of esophageal cancer associated with higher drinking temperatures, which was statistically significant in most of them . Regarding mate consumption, the number of studies was limited, but they consistently showed that the risk of esophageal cancer increased with both quantity consumed and temperature, and these two factors were independent risk factors.
“The available results are convincing. indicate that drinking beverages at a high temperature increases the risk of esophageal cancer.”
