A typical Western high-fat diet can increase the risk of painful disorders characteristic of people with diseases such as diabetes or obesity. Scientists from the University of Texas Medical Center in San Antonio came to this conclusion.
Moreover, changes in diet can significantly reduce or even reverse pain caused by conditions related to inflammation, such as arthritis, trauma or surgery.
The new discovery could help treat patients with chronic pain by simply changing their diet or developing drugs that block the release of certain fatty acids in the body. The study, on which a group of scientists worked for more than five years.
Dr. Jacob Boyd, one of the first authors, used several methods to study the role of polyunsaturated fatty acids in pain conditions. Scientists have found that typical Western diets high in omega-6 polyunsaturated fats are a significant risk factor for both inflammatory and neuropathic pain.
