Scientists have named the percentage of weight that should be lost for heart health
Cleveland Clinic in the USA conducted a study, the results of which showed that five to ten percent weight loss after bariatric surgery is enough to increase life expectancy and reduce risks for the cardiovascular system. Weight loss by classical methods is less effective and requires a result of 20 percent. In addition, bariatric surgery has overall health benefits, independent of weight loss.
In the observational study, 7,200 patients of the Cleveland Clinic took part: 1,200 patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes who underwent bariatric surgery, as well as 5,900 patients who were given the usual aid. About 80 percent of patients had hypertension, 74 percent had dyslipidemia (elevated triglycerides and cholesterol), and 31 percent were taking insulin to treat diabetes.
“After metabolic surgery, the risk of death and serious heart complications is reduced by losing 5 and 10 percent by weight, respectively. While in the group without surgery, the risks decreased after losing 20 percent of weight,” says Dr. Ali Aminian, the author of the study.
