Scientists have noticed the negative effect of coffee on human memory

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in many countries. Studies on the benefits and harms of this drink for health do not stop until now. It has recently been discovered that coffee can affect how the brain works.

A small study published in the journal Cerebral Cortex found that after a 10-day period of abstinence from caffeine, participants had more gray matter than those who , who continued to drink coffee.

20 healthy people who regularly drink this drink took part in the experiment. They took two capsules (one containing caffeine and the other a placebo) for two different 10-day periods. At the end of each period, the researchers studied the gray matter of the participants using brain scans.

The scientists found that the volume of gray matter was greater during the period of abstinence from caffeine. Its concentration was especially noticeable in the right medial temporal lobe, which includes the hippocampus – the area responsible for human memory.

Despite the fact that caffeine did reduce the volume of gray matter in the brain, in just 10 days of abstinence the brain could restore the indicator from coffee. This suggests that the effects of caffeine on the brain are likely to be temporary. But for complete certainty of the negative impact of the drink, additional research is needed.
