Thanks to a unique system that deciphers brain activity during sleep, a team from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland deciphered mental processes during deep sleep.
Combining functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG), the Geneva team proved that in the period of deep sleep, the brain sorts the information received during the day. At this time, the brain, which no longer receives external stimuli, can evaluate memories in order to save only the necessary ones.
For this, connections between certain areas of the brain are activated. At the same time, the presence of a reward for possessing some information encourages the brain to remember it for a long time.
