Scientists have told what to eat to reduce stress

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables, lowers stress levels, according to new research from Edith Cowan University (ECU).

The study looked at the relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption and stress levels in more than 8,600 Australians aged 25 to 91, who took part in the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute's Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (AusDiab) study.

The results showed that people who ate at least 470 grams of fruit and vegetables every day had 10 times less stress percent lower than those who consumed less than 230 grams. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends consuming at least 400 grams of fruits and vegetables per day.

Leading researcher, Ph.D. candidate Simone Radavelli-Bagatini of ECU's Nutrition Research Institute said the study strengthens the link between diets rich in fruits and vegetables and mental well-being.

“We found that people who consume more fruits and vegetables , are less stressed than those with lower intakes, suggesting that diet plays a key role in mental well-being,” said Ms Radavelli-Bagatini.

Food and Mood

While the mechanisms behind how fruit and vegetable consumption affects stress are still unclear, Ms Radavelli-Bagatini said key nutrients may be a factor.

“Vegetables and fruits contain important nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, flavonoids and carotenoids that can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress and therefore improve mental health,” she said.
