Interval fasting has become a real trend. However, not much was known about its true effect on weight loss. A new review has found that this type of eating actually promotes weight loss and may improve certain measures of heart health. Intermittent fasting unites a group of diets that are characterized by fasting with different breaks.
“A new study shows that different forms of intermittent fasting are effective weight loss measures for people with obesity,” says the author of the study. Krista Varady, director of human nutrition research at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
She emphasized that intermittent fasting can be an effective way to reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides. .
Moreover, these diets may help prevent type 2 diabetes by reducing insulin resistance and fasting insulin levels. Most of these benefits are likely related to weight loss.
“Intermittent fasting helps reduce caloric intake by 15-30% per day, which leads to weight loss,” Varadi notes. “When an obese person loses weight, they almost always experience lower levels of LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and insulin resistance.”
For the review, the researchers analyzed 11 papers on intermittent fasting. When the scientists looked at all the papers, they found that this approach to eating did lead to weight loss and improved risk factors for heart health. However, only every other day fasting and the 5:2 diet resulted in a clinically significant weight loss of more than 5%.
