About 10 are registered annually million new cases of dementia (a general term for a group of symptoms associated with brain decline). This term describes symptoms associated with progressive brain decline, such as memory loss and confusion.
Cognitive impairment begins mildly at first but becomes very devastating in later stages. Fortunately, progress has been made in understanding how to reduce the risk of developing dementia later in life.
A number of studies have converged on the benefits of following a Mediterranean diet in preventing brain decline.
The Mediterranean diet varies by country and region, so it has a number of definitions. But in general, this food system is rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, cereals, fish and unsaturated fats (olive oil). Another rule of thumb is low intake of meat and dairy products.
Most studies have focused on the overall benefits of the diet, but one study looked in detail at the specific components that help.
Harvard Health cited a study by scientists at the National Institutes of Health that evaluated the lifestyles of more than 7,750 participants who were followed for 5 to 10 years.
Participants filled out questionnaires to determine their eating habits and underwent cognitive tests memory, language and attention.
According to Harvard Health, fish was the “most important dietary factor” in reducing the risk of cognitive impairment. Vegetables came in second place, and all other products showed a smaller, insignificant effect.
