With a constant lack of quality sleep, the consequences all body systems begin to feel. First of all, the work of the brain suffers, as a result of which there are problems with concentration, memory and expression of emotions.
The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) distinguish two main phases of sleep: fast (REM) and slow sleep (non-REM). The latter is known as “deep sleep”, while during the former, a person actually dreams.
Given the importance of a night's rest for mental and physical health, Dr. Daniel Kripke and his research team from the University of California decided to find out how many hours of sleep per day would be optimal for a person, reports Express. In a study that lasted six years with the participation of more than one million volunteers, scientists came to the conclusion that it is best to sleep seven hours a day.
According to experts, this number of hours was associated with longevity and prevention of the risk of premature death What's more, it turned out that sleeping more than seven hours was associated with a shorter life expectancy. Scientists have also established that a night's rest that lasts less than 5.5 hours has an extremely negative effect on health.
Sleep less than seven hours a day as a whole was attributed to lack of sleep. “For example, if you miss two hours of sleep every night, after a week you will have 14 hours of sleep deprivation,” the scientists explained. “Playing catch-up” or sleeping longer on weekends can disrupt the wakefulness regime, which will also have a negative impact on health, experts warned.
