What we eat can affect both on our appearance and brain functions. Scientists believe that certain foods can accelerate its aging. Certified nutritionist Seren Poon said it's all about foods that cause inflammation.
Added sugar
According to Poon, consuming too much added sugar impairs memory. and increases the risk of dementia. Added sugar can be found almost everywhere, from drinks and desserts to salad dressings. One study found that excessive sugar consumption among older adults was associated with poorer cognitive function, but further trials are needed to examine the mechanism underlying this link.
Refined carbohydrates
Refined carbohydrates are found in white bread, pastries and breakfast cereals. They have no nutritional value. In addition, researchers have found that consuming refined carbohydrates can affect cognitive health. “Instead, choose whole grain products and other complex carbohydrates, such as legumes and vegetables,” the expert advised.
Processed meat
Scientists found out , that processed meat may increase the risk of dementia. This disease reduces cognitive function.
For brain health and longevity, Poon advised following an anti-inflammatory diet, such as the popular Mediterranean diet. She also recommends including foods rich in antioxidants, B vitamins and fatty acids in the diet.
