Secrets of longevity: scientists have found out how much time to spend on physical exercises

Exercise can make you live longer: regular exercise reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death. Scientists from the T. H. Chan Harvard School of Public Health in Boston (USA) announced new data – how much you need to exercise during the week to reduce the risk of early death.

Standard recommendations from the US Department of Health and Human Services are 150-300 minutes of moderate physical activity per week or 75-150 minutes of vigorous physical activity. The American Heart Association gives slightly different numbers: at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or at least 75 minutes of vigorous exercise. But the latest research suggests that those who want to live longer should devote more time to exercises and other physical activity.

Scientists analyzed the data of 100,000 people over 30 years. Study participants filled out a questionnaire every two years, reporting on their physical activity. As a result, the researchers found that adults who did two to four times more moderate or vigorous exercise per week than is standardly recommended had a lower long-term risk of death from all causes. Among those who engaged in vigorous physical activity, the risk of death decreased by 21–23%. With moderate physical activity – by 26-31%.

“This discovery may reduce concerns about the potential harmful effects of high levels of physical activity, which were noted in several previous studies,” explains one of the authors of the work, MD Science Dong Hun Lee. However, there is no need to overdo it. The scientists note that those who exercised more than four times the recommended weekly minimum had no additional reduction in the risk of death.
