Loneliness and social isolation significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a new study by scientists from the University of California, San Diego. Lonely and socially isolated people are more likely to suffer from a stroke or heart attack – and more likely to die from them.
Scientists' conclusions are based on data collected during studies around the world over the past 40 years. In particular, studies have shown that social isolation and loneliness increase the risk of stroke by almost a third, 32%.
“Studies spanning more than four decades have shown that social isolation and loneliness are associated with adverse consequences for health”, – notes the lead author of the work, professor of clinical medicine Dr. Crystal Vili Sene. He notes that these two factors are also associated with the worst prognosis for people who have already been diagnosed with coronary heart disease or stroke.
Both conditions, social isolation and loneliness are common but underappreciated factors. cardiovascular diseases and brain diseases, scientists add. They are also associated with elevated markers of inflammation, increased symptoms of chronic stress, lower levels of physical activity, and other behaviors that negatively impact cardiovascular and brain health.
