Side effects of aspirin: possible liver damage – its signals

Aspirin is one of of the most popular drugs for the treatment of pain, colds and flu-like symptoms, however, it can cause side effects.

To prevent unwanted effects of medication, doctors advise taking it in low doses. If, for example, an aspirin overdose occurs, it can lead to a variety of problems, including liver damage.

Aspirin is usually used for pain symptoms, in particular, for headache, toothache, menstrual pain, as well as for the treatment of colds and flu-like symptoms, reducing high fever. It is also known as acetylsalicylic acid and belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In many pharmaceutical cold and flu remedies, aspirin is present in combination with other ingredients.

This drug is not recommended for children under 6 years of age. In adults, one of the side effects of aspirin can be liver damage, warns the British National Health Service (NHS). The signal of this disorder is a change in the color of the skin, eyes, urine.

“If the whites of your eyes or skin turn yellow, or your urine becomes darker, this may be a sign of liver problems.”

The appearance of similar symptoms and taking aspirin instead is a serious reason to consult a doctor.

In addition, taking aspirin can contribute to ulcers of the mucous membrane of the digestive tract.

“Aspirin can cause ulcers in the stomach or intestines, especially if you take it for a long time or in large doses,” reminds the NHS.

Other serious side effects of aspirin can be signs of:

  • Internal secretions are happening blood appearing with cough, urine, stool.
  • Joints of hands and feet hurt – this may be a sign of high level of uric acid in the blood
  • Swollen hands or feet – in tissues retain water.
  • When taking aspirin, it is important to be sure that the drug is safe for the body, experts emphasize.
