Characteristic signs of a stroke , which will impress a person in the future, can be seen 10 years before this sad event. Experts from the Netherlands came to such a surprising conclusion.
In some people, signs of a future stroke can be detected 10 years before it happens. In particular, such people face a more rapid decline in intellectual activity and the ability to perform everyday tasks such as counting money and cooking. If these early signs are noticed in time, the probability of a stroke can be reduced by following a healthier lifestyle or taking preventive medications.
Researchers studied information on 14,712 people who were followed for 28 years. Each went through a series of intellectual and physical tests, as well as an interview at the start of the observations and every few years. People coped with tests on memory, vocabulary, reaction time, and experts evaluated the ability to do laundry, cook food, clean up and manage their own finances.
During the study, 1,662 participants experienced their first stroke, the average age was 80 years. The analysis showed that these people performed worse on all tests about 10 years before the stroke, compared to those who did not have an acute cerebrovascular accident. At the same time, the impairment of the ability to perform the most basic everyday tasks was especially pronounced in them two or three years before the onset of stroke. Women, people with a high school education, and those who had a poor heredity for Alzheimer's disease were at the highest risk of this brain disorder.
