Most often, bloating is caused by food and drink, but it can also be a sign of serious or dangerous disorders.
Holiday bloating is common, but nutritionist Signe Svanfeldt warns: it can be caused by more than just food and carbonated drinks.
Stomach feels overly full. Feeling full after eating a normal amount of food can be a warning sign of a number of conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), milk intolerance, or stomach cancer.
The dietitian said: if bloating from fullness occurs along with heartburn or acid reflux, problems swallowing, or a feeling of nausea, you should definitely see a doctor.
Discomfort or pain.Bloating that is accompanied by discomfort and pain in the stomach can be a sign of stomach cancer, in which case the pain is felt in the upper abdomen. In addition, painful bloating can be associated with IBS or celiac disease, an autoimmune digestive disorder in which the intestines become inflamed in response to gluten (a protein in wheat, barley, rye).
Grumbling in the stomach. Bloating with sounds in the stomach can be a sign of Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel diseases. It can also be explained by food intolerance or IBS.
Floating. Increased gas formation with bloating can be associated with IBS, food allergies or intolerances (such as lactose intolerance).
When to see a doctor. According to Signe Svanfeldt, bloating is not always dangerous. But in the following cases, you should see a doctor.
- If bloating does not go away after a couple of days or lasts for several weeks
- If you feel a tightness in your stomach.
- If unintentional weight loss occurs along with bloating.
- If blood is found in your stool.
