Proper sanitary pruning of hydrangea is the key to its beautiful flowering. It's not just that you took a secateurs in the fall and cut everything to zero. You need to understand the plan of action to do everything correctly.
Shoots. You need to cut off everything that is dry, broken, diseased or thin. Do not leave anything that can take away the strength of the bush and waste nutrients. Ideally, after pruning, only strong shoots will be able to overwinter.
Number of branches. It depends on the age of the bush. If it is an adult, then from 6 to 10 really strong shoots may remain. Less and less is removed so that the hydrangea can rejuvenate.
Buds. Pay attention to their number. At least 2-3 should be left. If desired, all 5 can be left. This is at your own discretion.
Rule for the bud. The cut with the pruner is not made under the bud itself. Approximately 1 cm of the shoot is left above it.
Length. There is such a fact: the shorter the pruning, the larger the inflorescences will be next year. If you want to have a lush crown, then prune higher.
Treatment. After pruning the hydrangea bush, treat it with any preparation that contains copper. This can be copper sulfate.
