Skipping breakfast can be beneficial for eyesight, as scientists from South Korea found . It turns out that this habit reduces the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration.

South Korean researchers from Yonsei University College of Medicine found that the habit of skipping breakfast is associated with a reduced risk of developing macular degeneration. 4,500 people aged 55 and older took part in the observations. The researchers received information about their diet, and the observation period itself was three years. Its participants were divided into two groups, depending on whether they ate breakfast during the week or not.

The participants in the breakfast group were then compared to people who practiced so-called intermittent fasting, during which they did not eat at all breakfast. All of these participants also underwent screenings to identify the risk of developing age-related macular dystrophy, the most common cause of vision loss in the elderly.

The results showed that 25% of all patients faced this very common age-related vision disease. However, in the intermittent fasting group who skipped breakfast, participants had a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration compared to those who did not skip breakfast. This was especially observed in people younger than 70 years old, who were obese, and even in cities.
