Tiredness that manifests itself constantly can be a symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), which cannot be eliminated by a more relaxed lifestyle and long sleep. Over time, it begins to interfere with your normal lifestyle, forces you to change plans and cancel appointments.
It is not easy to make this diagnosis. There are no analyzes or tests that will show it with a hundred percent probability. In addition, this syndrome is often masked by other ailments, such as fibromyalgia or depression, and almost 90% of people never receive a diagnosis. Ask yourself these questions – and if you are tempted to answer “yes”, contact a specialist with a serious complaint.
1. Do you feel tired after a good night's sleep?
This is one of the most important signs of CFS: sleep does not bring relief. 8, 10, 12 hours of sleep – and you still wake up exhausted. What causes this condition is still not fully understood, but in some cases such fatigue occurs after viral infections. A combination of factors may be at work: a strong immune system response, hormonal changes, brain biochemistry, but there is no research to support this yet.
2. Have you had it for a long time?
People notice this condition already after a week or two, but the diagnosis is given only to those whose fatigue persists for six months or more. Only about 5% of those who have difficulty getting up in the morning are like that.
3. Does active activity make your condition worse?
Going to work, stress, even climbing stairs can become so difficult that it takes hours or even days to recover. If you notice something similar, be sure to see a doctor.
4. Do you have pain?
Migraines, muscle and joint pain, and sore throat may be accompanying symptoms. If you have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis or fibromyalgia, but medications do not help, you should raise the issue of chronic fatigue syndrome.
